Description:
This native shrub forms clusters of small white flowers followed by porcelain-blue berries that attract birds. Lush green foliage turns reddish-purple adding a beautiful Fall interest to the landscape. It creates a great screening or informal hedge and is perfect in a woodland setting. The brightly-colored bark occurs on stems that are less than 3 years old, so annual pruning should be a regular practice to achieve this. If you want height, just remove the oldest third of stems down to the base of the plant every year or two to promote the growth of the younger, red stems. Red Osier dogwood is also used in plantings for wildlife as its berries attract and are eaten by birds and mammals.

Adaptable to sandy, loam, or clay soils and average to wet soil. Once established it is drought tolerant and adaptable to very poor to well-drained soil and compacted soil. Stems are great in Fall and Winter decor arrangements and one of the best for winter colour against the white snow.
