Description:
The European beech forms a densely branched, upright, oval to rounded, spreading crown. The dark green ovate to elliptic glossy leaves have a wavy texture and will produce a nut enclosed in a spiny bract. The foliage turns a golden bronze in the Fall and the leaves will stay on for most of the winter depending on winter weather conditions. The tree forms a smooth, light grey bark. A large tree at maturity is ideal for large spaces such as lawns and parks. Low-branched trees can be planted in multiples and pruned to create a dense screening or hedge.

European beech grows best in rich, moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade, and does not tolerate hot, dry sites. European beech is primarily distinguished from the similar American beech by its smaller size, darker grey bark, and smaller leaves. Pruning is done when the tree is dormant.
