Description:
Fragrant white panicles of perfect florets become magnets to butterflies. It blooms mid-Summer when many other shrubs are done flowering. Seed heads persist through the Winter into the next season. The leaves are late to emerge in Spring, so patience is needed before pruning, as you might think it has died. These lustrous green leaves turn yellow in the Fall. The compact habit makes it good for small gardens and the fragrance is outstanding.
Summersweet blooms on current season's growth, so any pruning needed should be done early Spring, but this is a slow grower, so light pruning is recommended. Summersweet grows best in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. It cannot tolerate hot, dry sites.
